This year is full of funky, eye-catching furniture and decorating trends and designers believe it’s all about being bold and multi-functional.

Ever consider painting the ceiling of a room? Keep this look in mind when wanting to make a space feel more intimate and cosy. Colours have been used for decades to express emotions and set the mood for different businesses too.

For example, spas tend to go with calming and soothing colours such as blue and home-owners tend to paint their kitchens yellow because it’s believed to brighten up a person’s frame of mind and help increase energy.

Now imagine the effect a splash of colour on a ceiling can do?

For those that would like to dabble, remember to either continue to the ceiling with a base colour or make a strong statement by using an accent colour.

And, why not make colours bolder and brighter? Pair a bold shade with a calmer or more neutral hue to make a statement. After all, the Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2019 is ‘Living Coral’. It is a nurturing hue that appears in every day natural surroundings.

Another tip is to add lots of greenery to the humble abode. This trend will never get old and still provides a relaxed ambience to a lot of homeowners. This is especially ideal for those usually rooted in the shelter of their living rooms or study areas.

Bring the outdoors in by adding giant flora and potted plants to a room such as a dragon tree, an Aloe Vera plant, a rubber tree or palm tree. Also, keep the vibe of your homework space cool and earthy with a large plant flanking the side of your desk.

Also, the ‘less is more’ movement continues with people purchasing items that can be cleverly used in different ways such as the ‘murphy bed’, also known as a pull-down or fold-down bed. It is hinged at one end to store vertically against the wall or inside a closet or cabinet. According to some experts, this kind of bed is making a big comeback this season and is a great addition for people living in smaller apartments.

Multi-functional furniture is great for people lacking space and storage room. An ottoman, for example, can double up as a coffee table, a stool and a storage unit.

This method can also help singles keep their home tidy because everything can have a place and a purpose.

Don’t forget to stick to a style and incorporate small touches of it into a room rather than trying to copy the look in its entirety. For example, beach lovers can add bowls full of shells and candles in jars full of sand to coffee tables and shelves and decorate with nautical hues.

Other top tips to keep in mind or play around with feature floral patterns, copper accents artisanal fixtures and velvet furnishings.
