US Shock-Jock Don Imus was fired for referring to a women’s basketball team as “nappy-headed hos”.
I’ve made no secret of the fact that racism in any form is something I have very little time for but to fire the man for doing his job doesn’t really seem very fair.
The whole point of a shock-jock and the very reason they get paid the big bucks is to be as rude and controversial as they can possibly manage to be.
Personally, I have never really understood the appeal of shock-jocks but they have lasted for a reason, so who am I to judge? Admittedly, with the climate of political correctness we live in back in the Western world he should have thought twice before opening his mouth but at the end of the day it’s the very people that called for his resignation that are ultimately to blame – the public.
If the public didn’t have such a thirst for laughing at each others’ expense, shock-jocks would never have become such a popular phenomenon and the issue would never have come up in the first place. To create a demand for something and then turn around and complain about that very thing when it doesn’t suit you anymore is nothing less than hypocritical.
