What an amazing April it has been with the whole world watching Bahrain for the Gulf Air Grand Prix. My mum even said she saw me on the TV in the UK … and no, it wasn’t just interference!
My wife Wendy and I were lucky enough to be invited by the lovely people from Riffa Views to this great day out. One of the highlights for me (of which there where many) was going on the pit walk which meant mingling with the drivers, mechanics, media and other lovers of motor racing. While we were wandering about I saw Lewis Hamilton and shouted “Come on, you can beat Fernando today!” Little did I know that Alonso was right behind me, Oops! He said something back in Spanish (It’s probably lucky that I don’t understand Spanish). But my encouragement might have helped Lewis because he came in 2nd after another amazing drive in only his first season in Formula 1. On the big day there were also acrobatic planes, musicians, stilt walkers, the amazing Gulf Air fly-past and, of course, my all time favourite; a bouncy castle. It all added up to non-stop fun and a fantastic atmosphere. Well done to all the gang at BIC for their hard work and a big thanks to my double act partner Martin Whitaker; (head honcho down at the BIC) for his chat with me on the radio on the morning of the big race. One of the things I really love about living in Bahrain is all the different nationalities that live and work here and the great interaction between everybody. When I DJ on Radio Bahrain (five mornings a week) and have competitions and quizzes, or even just talk to people phoning in for dedications; I really enjoy the variety of accents and talking to people from all walks of life and from all over the globe is really exciting. I’m an optimist and it’s easy to be that way when you get to meet and chat to so many cheerful people in the mornings. Mostly, anyway. I’ve recently started doing a show on 104.2 Voice FM with my co-host Juhi. It’s on every Thursday from 9 til 10am. Last week we had a special show that was sponsored by Paul Frank (a brand new and very funky store that’s just opened in Seef Mall). We staged a competition to win a t-shirt and people had to SMS us with the answer to; “what kind of animal is Julius?” We had everything from sheep to elephant even though I kept giving clues like “his favourite food is bananas”. In the end we had over 70 SMS! We picked three lucky winners out of the hat and after the show I went along to the store. They had a special opening day and we could select a T-shirt and then silk screen it ourselves. So groovy … I chose a plain t-shirt and was shown the process; which is putting the t-shirt on the table then sliding a rubber brush (which has paint on it) over the t-shirt. It came out great! Which for me was lucky, because I’m a bit artistically challenged. Many thanks going out to Priya and the rest of the staff for looking after me and also for giving us a couple of great prizes for this week’s quiz. On a sadder note, this week we went to a leaving party for Phil & Fiona Couchman. The party was great; it’s them leaving all the way to DHL in South Africa that I’m sad about. The food was great, the company lively and the dessert was chocolate…a chocolate Fountain which we dipped fruit into — or in my case filled up a cup from. It’s my birthday in August and Wendy is already stressing about what to get me — so if anyone can tell us where you buy a little chocolate fountain we would both be very grateful. It’s certainly been a fun week. I was also at the British Club’s Spring Fete on Friday which was a blast as always it was a glorious day with lots of families enjoying various side stalls like beat the goalie (which was easy as it was the Villa keeper – oops, sorry Adrian), tombola, darts and a raffle that went on so long it should be put into the Guinness Book of Records ha..!! And it’s always great to meet fans, mine are usually aged 10 and under, however, on this day I met someone a little bit older; he danced to my music by the pool until he fell in. He then disappeared for a while before making a comeback. Brilliant live entertainment I thought, though I’ll bet he wasn’t feeling too lively on Saturday. A big hi going out to Paul, the crazy dancer. Until next week, keep smiling Krazy Kevin
