Will Ferrell and Jon Heder star in a comedy about two outlawed champion figure skaters who seek redemption by teaming up as the first all-male ice dancing pair It’s easy to see the appeal of the glitzy, glamorous world of figure skating for Ferrell. Be it Christmas in Elf, TV news in Anchorman: The Legend Of Ron Burgundy or Nascar racing in Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby, Ferrell relishes affectionately lampooning hallowed American institutions and the naively deluded yet soft-centred klutzes who worship them. A goofy character name, the shameless flaunting of his doughy physique, some skewed comic riffing and he’s away. All this on ice while clad in spandex? Here his Chazz Michael Michaels, a swaggering, sex-addicted boozehound, gets banned for life from the sport he loves after a very public rink-side disagreement with his arch rival, fey pretty-boy Jimmy MacElroy (Heder). Both on the skids, they team up when a loophole is revealed that will allow them to compete as a pair, much to the chagrin of ruthless brother/sister champions, the wonderfully named Stranz and Fairchild Van Waldenberg (Arnett and Poehler), who plot to derail their new rivals. Not that they need any help: MacElroy and Michael’s coach (Nelson) is determined that his charges will perfect the notorious ‘iron lotus’ move, a deadly maneouvre that has only ever resulted in decapitation; more blades of gory than glory. - Jim Baker
