IT’S been a busy week for me. As they say no rest for the wicked. Eh! Come on, where’s the sympathy? Aaaww!
This week I met Daniel and Benita and was asked to DJ at their wedding reception on Thursday night at the Mövenpick Hotel. What an event it was. As Benita hails from India and Daniel is from Canada and they both live in the melting pot that is Bahrain, there was an amazing cultural mix. A DJ has to know how to mix up different music styles at an event such as this. But this one definitely had me sweating. We started off with a traditional slow dance for the newly-married couple. Then I did my best to get both families dancing too. After just about managing that, I then introduced more upbeat music. But soon only half the crowd were dancing! Then a guest walked over and asked for some Hindi music. Great! So I put some on. Then the crowd who were on the floor sat down and the other half started dancing…hmmm. While I was wondering what to do, Darryl (Dan’s brother) came and asked for Country music. Well, to be honest I had none (except for Billy Ray Cyrus’s Achy Breaky Heart, that is). Since Darryl is from Canada I played some Bryan Adams instead; which made him happy enough. But I really wished I’d brought some country rubbish…oops, I mean Country music. It got me thinking about a friend who has his entire music collection on laptop. That’s what I need to do. Back to the wedding…the funniest thing was when an old school friend of Dan asked for Daft Punk. I played some, and she was the only person dancing for a full seven minutes. It was the first and probably last time I’ll ever play Daft Punk at a wedding. Anyway she was happy and that’s what counts. I’d like to wish Benita and Daniel all the best for the future. The next day I took my family to the Al A’ali complex for the ‘Water is life’ kids’ drawing competition and Environmental Awareness Day, where the aim was to create awareness about the importance of water conservation. The event was extremely good value (only BD1 to enter). The kids were all given a ‘goodie bag’ filled with crayons, pencils and felt-pens etc, as well as a rather nice Polo shirt, water bottle, crisps and an ice-cream voucher. My three-year-old daughter Hannah got right into it. After we explained it as best we could, she told her mummy to draw two dinosaurs (Barney’s mummy and daddy) and one of them had to be breathing water instead of fire. She also said to draw a sun and the sky (which had to be sad). She then busied herself colouring it in and drawing blobs (raindrops) everywhere. I’m not too sure what it all meant, but I know that in her own way she understood. She was having such a good time colouring that I wandered off to get her ice-cream. But when I offered it to her she didn’t want it — she was too busy. So I ate it. Then, when she finished, the first thing she wanted was ice-cream. Sigh! So I went back to the ice-cream man, admitted that I had eaten my daughter’s ice-cream, and asked if I could please have another one — for her this time. The event was well-attended and the funds raised will go to many charity organisations. We all had a lovely morning of fun and look forward to more events like this in Bahrain. It was great to see people from so many walks of life getting together to support worthwhile charities and spend time with their children. It also made us remember how lucky we are. The kids from Al Sanabel Orphanage were also in attendance and having a great time. When I went upstairs to meet them, Hannah was getting tired and a bit grumpy. But when we told her that they were ‘real’ orphans who really didn’t have a mummy or daddy she behaved herself…for a while at least. Keep Happy – Krazy Kevin
