This past week has been a very good one for meeting lots of people; which is one of the things that I enjoy about my life.

But, ooh-la-la, at the start of the week you would not have recognised me. I looked so very different from my usual self!

I’m a big kid at heart and love to play dress-ups … but I’m not saying anything more for now except that all will be revealed in the coming weeks. Well, maybe not ‘all’, but it’s fun to keep you guessing!

So, the week that was…

On Monday, The BSPCA thrift shop had a special book sale and with my daughter Hannah and wife Wendy being book lovers, we popped on down.

There was a great selection and we picked up some real bargains. I even found a few books for me (I like reading autobiographies).

The ladies at the BSPCA do a sterling job and while we were there I took the opportunity to present the 68 dinars that was collected a couple of weeks ago at a Riffa Golf Club party.Later on in the week I had the pleasure to work with the lovely people from Mass Computer Technology at the Computer Exhibition.

I had a call a couple of weeks ago from Suheya Hafeez. Business development manager, and we had a meeting to see what I could do for them at the Bahrain Computer and Home Technologies Shopping Festival, which was held at the Bahrain International Exhibition Centre.

It was decided that I would be on one of their stands and would do quiz questions and give out prizes.

But first, I needed to arrange something to wear in their corporate colours of Blue and Silver. So, of cours,e I contacted Yusef (my magical tailor from down the souq) and arranged a shirt in the colours, but cut into quarters.

It definitely looked a bit ‘different’ (or normal for me)!

I turned up the first day and started doing my thing on the microphone, telling the crowd about special offers and discounts from Mass Computer Technology. Then suddenly, talking and music started blaring from another stand, and then from another, and we were all getting louder and louder apparently trying to drown each-other out.  Hmm… problem!

The organiser of the event; my old mate Saeed Omar from CTM Management, came over and said that the noise from everybody was too loud and asked what can we do about it?

I replied “let’s get the people from other stands with music together and try to sort it out amicably”. So we did; with separate times for everyone to get their message across.

When it was my turn, we had an auction for a rather fabulous HP Laptop computer. I was given all the specifications of the model and there I was, going on about gigabytes, RAM, Bluetooth compatible and such. To tell you the truth I thought I was talking another language, for all it meant to me.

But it was great fun and one lucky chap went away with a real bargain. Then I jumped on a chair and called out some quick fire questions for more prizes; a funny one was when I asked “what are the corporate colours of Mass?” The answers I got were hilarious … because there I was, stood in front of everybody in my crazy blue and silver shirt and people where coming out with pink, green and purple. Ha!

It made me realise that folks so expect me to wear crazy shirts that they don’t think there might be a special reason for it sometimes.

Also, I did a little run round with the microphone, going to stands like Cellucom and HP and doing speedy auctions for mobile phones, printers and accessories. The prices that where paid for some the items were so cheap I wished I could have bid myself.

The four-day exhibition was a great success with bargains and opportunities galore for everyone who attended the event.  Roll on next year I say.  I’d be happy to do it all again!

From the desk of     Maria B

Hi friends,

Gregory Smith is a university graduate with a major in mathematics. He, along with three-time heavyweight boxing champion Mohammad Ali, is the co-chair of the World of Children Award.

He is the founder of International Youth Advocates (IYA), an organization that aims to protect young people from violent situations. He was thrice nominated for Nobel Peace Price.

When nominated for the first time in 2002, the jury was quite perplexed in considering his case. It was not because his citation was unimpressive. They felt uneasy conferring this prestigious Award to a 12-year old child.

He is not the only one of his type. Ruth Lawrence joined Oxford University at the age of 11 and graduated when she was 13. The university did not do a favour to her by giving admission. She had topped the entrance examination amongst 600 candidates.

Marla Olmstead is a painter of abstract art. His problem is that the money box recently gifted to him by his father on his sixth birthday cannot contain millions of dollars, which he has earned by selling his paintings.

The scientists believe that these kids are gifted with the quality to focus and avoid mental distraction. This is something which I wish to learn even now.
