Appropriate attire is a true sense of your own style and an appreciation for the occasion or time of day.

Day time

With regards to your hairstyle, develop a style that best flatters you all through out the day. This should not overwhelm your appearance.

With make-up, always use something that makes you look fresh and clean.

On jewellery, always remember this “less is more,” simple pieces are always elegant and classic. There are times when you can get away with trendy/fashionable jewellery but remember it will always have to be appropriate with the given occasion.

Nails should be clean and natural - these are the operative words here … anything else is de trop for daytime.

Last, but not least, for day time dressing it is ideal to wear clothes that are suitable for lunches with friends, going to the office and doing errands.

Night time

First of all, think as to where you are going. If you have to watch an opera take some effort to dress up. Wear a dress that radiates, that gives sparkle and shine. Always remember – dress to thrill!

Dressing up is one of the things we women like doing since we were as young as five. Do you remember the time that we would sneak into our mum’s wardrobe and get pieces that we would wear together with those high-heeled shoes and accessories to match it up with?

You must agree with me that up until today we still like to play dress up and that makes each and every day exciting.

Going back, remember that an evening event is the best time to show off that fancy dress and accessorises.

Disasters ...

Heels snapping, buttons bursting/popping and best laid plans that go awry ... are things that happen, or can happen, to everyone.

During situations like these it is always best to be pragmatic, resourceful and do your best to look upon the incident as incidental. Just laugh about it and so something to fix it … nothing worse than crying over spilt milk … move on.

A big run or hole in your stockings? Go immediately to the nearest washroom and remove them.

If it is a requirement at work to wear stockings make sure that you carry an extra pair everywhere you go.

Some tips on how to make your stockings last longer –stock-up stockings in your freezer (newly purchased ones that are still in plastic packages) keeping them chilled makes it more elastic and less prone to immediate snaps.

You can use some hairspray on your stockings to prevent the run from going any further – or you can use clear lip gloss or that wonderful colourless nail polish.

There is nothing more horrifying than to see women wearing sleeveless shirts/ blouses and their bra straps showing or even worse wearing a black bra with a white shirt on it … that is so “fashion road kill!”

Please, ladies, avoid doing this as it does not in any way look sexy, it looks rather cheap and gives an impression that you do not know how to wear the right under garment for your clothes.

Wear a skin coloured bra (which always works) and the right kind of strap or strapless bra for haltered sleeves or sleeveless shirts.

If somehow you were not able to change your bra, make sure you borrow a shawl from one of your colleagues or, better yet, always carry one in your car for emergency purposes. If that shoe heel breaks ... what do you do? I have experienced that particularly here, in the Middle East, shoes are prone to breaking – mostly the heels!

I always carry super glue with me that helps fix the problem for the time being. And from that time on I make sure that I always bring an extra pair of shoes with me in the car, just in case.
