Satirical superhero television series The Boys is set to premiere two episodes of its fifth and final season on Amazon Prime Video on April 8.

New episodes will continue to release until May 20.

The American show tackles a universe where superpowered individuals – Supes – are recognised as heroes by the general public. They work for Vought International – a powerful corporation that markets and monetises them.

However, outside of their superhero personas, they are self-serving and recklessly causing collateral damage.

The series focuses on two groups: CIA-sponsored black ops agents called The Boys, who are looking to bring down Vought and its corrupt superheroes, and The Seven – Vought’s premier superhero team and The Boys’ adversaries.

The final season is set to showcase how the world has gotten worse after The Seven’s Homelander (Antony Starr) seized control of the country.

Meanwhile, Starlight (Erin Moriarty), a superheroine with energy manipulation powers, has formed a resistance to Homelander while the rest of his team is scattered, and leader Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) reappears and gathers The Boys to take him down.

In an interview, show creator Eric Kripke recalled approaching the finale with ‘an appropriate amount of terror’.

“I wasn’t like, ‘We got this!’ I was like, ‘it’s so important to nail this. We can’t overthink it enough’,” he said.

“I just hope they’re (the fans) satisfied. I hope they end it, and they go ‘yeah, man. That was how that should have ended. I feel good about that’,” he added.
