Bahrain's very own piano prodigy Sid Ramchander will be performing his debut recital at St Christopher's Junior School in Saar in a bid to help needy children.

Sid, 15, from A'ali, is in Year 12 at the school and is considered "a very bright spark" in the music department.

He practices playing the piano for three hours every day and said: "I aspire to grow up and become a concert pianist. Music helps me express myself and I enjoy improvising. I believe it is all about commitment.

"I will be playing several interesting pieces of different moods which will include short pieces such as Sugar Plum Fairy by Tchaikovsky and The Waltz from The Masquerade by Khachaturian."

The repertoire for the show on Saturday, November 24, will also include classical music that reflects a rich legacy of leading composers such as Bach, Chopin, Rachmaninov and Mozart.

His piano teacher, celebrated concert pianist Olga Aoust, will perform alongside Sid for some unique four-hand, two-piano compositions.

Greatly encouraged by his parents, Christine and Ram, a banker in Bahrain, Sid, is also tutored by Maestro Evgeny Moguilevsky of the Royal Conservatoire of Brussels, Belgium.

Every summer he attends Master Classes in Embrun, France, with the Universite d'Ete Lions de la Musique, where he also has the opportunity to perform at several concerts in many cities.

In February 2007, Sid won the 'Best Pianist Award' at the prestigious Young Musicians of the Gulf competition.

He has performed as a lead soloist with the Belarusian Youth Orchestra, conducted by the renowned cellist Vladimir Perlin, at the Bahrain International Music Festival.

His other performances in Bahrain include concerts with the Bahrain Concert Sinfonia.

In 2005, Sid had the privilege of accompanying world-renowned tenor Huw Priday for a Handel's Messiah performance.

St Christopher's School this year presented him with a special 'Outstanding Achievement in Music' award.

His proud mother, Christine, said: "We are so privileged to have this concert at the St Christopher's acoustically-designed auditorium because it provides an ideal venue for a performance of this nature.

"Given his keen involvement in the music programmes at St Christopher's School, and in recognition of the support and encouragement he has received from the school faculty, it has been Sid's preference and ours as his parents, to perform his debut recital at the school."

Tickets for the event are priced at BD3 and all proceeds from Sid's recital will go to the needy children supported by international agency, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

The tickets will be available at St Christopher's Infant, Junior and Senior schools in Budaiya, Saar and Isa Town respectively; the Alliance Francaise, The Bookcase and the Dilmun Club.
