Stage set for laughter

There's nothing like a little Am-Dram to put you in the thespian spirit. The minute I walked into the British Club to sneak a peek at the technical rehearsal of The Manama Theatre Club's latest stage offering, I was transported back to my days of stage stardom (a girl can dream can't she?).

Rehearsal for Alan Ayckbourn's Relatively Speaking was in full swing and the first thing I noticed as I walked in was the 60s inspired costumes worn by actors Gavin Baldwin and Simone Hunter (Greg and Ginny in the play).

The four-person play was Ayckbourn's first hit and instrumental in establishing him as a successful writer and director as well as helping to launch Richard Briers' (of The Good Life, Ever Decreasing Circles and Monarch of the Glenn fame) career.

This is a comedy about mistaken identity and hidden agendas; Greg and Ginny are in love planning to get married when Greg starts to have doubts about an ex-relationship of Ginny's.

Following her to the countryside he mistakes her ex-lover Philip (played by director Mike Franklin) and his confused wife Sheila (played by Anne Khoheeji) for her parents, leading to some hilarious results.

Not wanting to spoil the story for you, I'll stop here. But if you're looking for a night of great entertainment, The Manama Theatre Club are more than ready to oblige today, Thursday and Friday at the British Club in Umm Al Hassam.

The performance will start at 8pm with tickets for the show priced at BD6.

Thursday and Friday's performances will include dinner at 7.30pm before the show starts at 8.30pm.

Tickets for the dinner play are priced at BD11. For further information call 17728245.
