Restaurants serve up for a charitable cause

AID charity Oxfam and the British Bangladeshi Chamber of Commerce and have joined forces to come up with a novel way to raise money for Bangladeshi cyclone victims. Under the scheme, some 10,000 Bangladeshi owned restaurants and thousands of shops will ask customers if they wish to add £1 (775 fils) to their bill.

The money will then be donated and used to help the relief effort in the aftermath of the cyclone which has left victims without adequate food and water for more than a week. Great thinking!

With the cost of a decent meal in London an extra pound on the end of your bill is nothing at all.

It wouldn't even get you a bottle of mineral water but could be the difference between life and death for a cyclone victim in Bangladesh. And what better place to feel the guilt of the knowledge of starving people than in a restaurant? If only one person per restaurant were to donate the money it would mean raising £10,000 from a previously untapped source.

Maybe only a drop in the ocean to what is needed but certainly more than enough to make a considerable difference to hundreds of sick and starving victims.
