The official opening of the Hunainiya Range, a brand new golf driving range, took place at Bahrain Golf Club in Riffa under the patronage of its president Shaikh Abdulla bin Salman bin Khalid Al Khalifa.
The facility has been donated to the kingdom by Arcapita Bank, and is the first step in the establishment of a golf academy to develop the game in Bahrain.
"Arcapita have formed a committee with Bahrain International Golf Course Company (BIGCC) and Riffa Views to co-operate in developing golf amongst the youth of Bahrain. The opening of the Hunainiya Range is the first important step towards achieving that goal," said chief executive Atif Abdulmalik at the ceremony.
The aim is now to encourage more young Bahraini sport lovers to take up their clubs. "Making golf practice facilities more accessible to people of all nationalities and economic backgrounds is an important objective for BIGCC," explained its representative, Michael Braidwood.
"Our aim is to encourage young Bahrainis to take up this wonderful sport and look forward to seeing them enjoying these fantastic new amenities at Bahrain Golf Club."
Abdulla Sultan Al Hakam and Khalifa Faris Al Marisi, members of the Bahrain senior and junior national teams respectively, played the opening shots on the new 250-yard range which boasts 24 shaded bays and floodlights for night practice. Mr Abdulmalik then unveiled a commemorative statue, which will stand at the entrance to the range.
