The American Mission Hospital (AMH) has opened a new Special Baby Care Unit specialising in handling emergency and complicated cases internally without having to transfer little ones fighting for life to other medical facilities.

The unit, part of the hospital's Obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit has been funded by Bank of Bahrain and Kuwait (BBK) as part of its community development projects.

The bank has donated BD20,000 over two years to equip the unit with a ventilator as well as a monitor.

The ventilator is mainly used for premature babies to assist them with their breathing and the monitor is used to keep a watch on their heartbeats.

BBK chief executive officer Abdulkarim Bucheery said: "BBK is proud to be actively involved in many projects that benefit the community in a number of ways and we are pleased to support AMH once again in its endeavours to help meet healthcare needs in Bahrain."

AMH chief medical officer Dr Paul Armerding said: "For the last few years BBK has taken a keen interest in our Ob/Gyn services and have supported this clinic tremendously. We are grateful for their continuing support which has helped us launch the Special Baby Care Unit this year."

Hospital marketing and development co-ordinator Bahnaz Abbas added: "We highly appreciate it that BBK has once again supported our main fundraising initiative of the year. Their continuing support has helped us to mark improvements and developments in the Ob/Gyn unit of AMH without having to add to the costs to the patients.

"With the launch of the unit we are looking forward to providing the best possible medical care to even more patients," she said.

The new unit, open 24-hours a day, will be staffed with a team of doctors and nurses.
