¥ Saudi artist Zahra Bu Ali is exhibiting her artwork called 'Miniatures' at the Bahrain Arts Society from May 20. Her work relates to two aspects of her aesthetic experience including the way she tended to work, with small size paintings, etchings and prints, and sculptures and focusing her vision on miniatures and the vast world and space that can be created and experienced within them. The exhibition will feature her works which include oil on canvas and paper, acrylics on paper, etching and printing from zinc, copper, wood, multimedia works, small-scale sculptures as well as a large-scale multimedia. ¥ An art exhibition will be held at the British School Bahrain's new premises in Hamala on May 22. Twenty-five students will be exhibiting their work - 17 at GCSE and eight at A-Level. The main themes for this year will be Links and Connections, Transition and Barriers and the paintings will be a mixture of representational, semi abstract and abstract work including portraiture, the figure, video art, wire sculpture, installation and painting. Notable pieces at the exhibition will be MTV animated 'shorts', a wake for a rag doll, large-scale gloss-paint 'suspects' portraits, farmyard chic, plasticised portraiture and obsessive collections of the macabre. ¥ The Young Goans Club will host its annual May Queen contest on May 22 at the Marina Club poolside in Manama. The event is only by invitation and begins at 8.30pm. The contest is open for women of all nationalities aged between 15 and 28. The event will feature a fashion show featuring eight models and entertainment will be provided by cover band Aryan Fame alongside a DJ from Music and Lights. ¥ The American Women's Association (AWA) is hosting its Annual Spring Bazaar on May 24 at the Bapco Club in Awali. The event, which began in 1992, will showcase a number of craft items. This year marks the AWA's 11th spring fundraising event. Table prices will range from BD6 to BD30 and the event will be held from 1pm to 6pm. ¥ A festival of contemporary French cinema will be showcased by the Alliance Francaise Bahrain at the French Film Festival in Seef Mall from May 28 to June 9. The festival's line up includes seven movies - Je ne suis pas lˆ pour tre aimŽ (Not here to be loved), Le lait de la tendresse humaine (The milk of human kindness), Les Visiteurs (The visitors), Les parapluies de Cherbourg (The umbrella of Cherbourg), Kirikou et les betes sauvages (Kirikou and the wild beasts), Le petit lieutenant (The little lieutenant) and De l'autre c™tŽ de la mer (The other side of the sea) with subtitles available in Arabic and English. The festival aims at exploring the different dimensions of movie making, without restricting it to any specific genres or age groups with themes ranging from dramas to comedy and animation to musicals. ¥ The Indian Club in Manama is set to host the May Queen Ball 2008 on May 29. All contestants will go through a grooming session to be conducted by show choreographer Shamima Noorani. The contest will consist of three rounds on the catwalk. There will be prizes for the winner, first and second runners-up as well as the winners of the Best Smile, Best Hairdo and Best Model.
