GulfWeekly Editor Stan Szecowka and his wife Kathryn concluded a six-week beginners' golf course with the final one last week...
So, I finally found my golfing niche ... the club of choice and the tool to make a difference in a sport I feared could only provide me with an aching back and plenty of frustration.
After six weeks of lessons I finally got the swing of it with a Number 5 Wood. What a weapon and what a difference it makes when you hit the ball straight and sure and watch it fly.
I love my wood. It's a little longer than the irons, you keep it warm with a sock and in return it sends the ball soaring.
Get this right and I can see how it's possible to place the ball close to the green, nice little chip on to the hallowed turf (or brown dyed sand) for my second shot and down the hole for a Par 3 (see, I even know the technical terms!)
After top coaching by columnist Chris I feel ready to put all my lessons to the test.
We now have the knowledge and simply lack the practice.
A challenging putting course has been set up in the office and any one of the GulfWeekly team can challenge the editor (apart from sports reporter Mai who having never picked up a club in her life somehow managed to place a 30-foot put directly into a cardboard box on her first attempt).
Kathryn, the good lady wife, is also keen as mustard to show who has the golfing prowess in our household. So, instead of taking her out for a bite to eat I'm going to spoil her next week and challenge her to a game. I'll even let her carry the bags. I wonder what a Number 5 Wood feels like wrapped around your head ... I've got a feeling I'm going to find out.
