Even Johnny can't save rotten movie

The minute I saw the trailers for Public Enemies I said to myself, "I have to see this movie." Not because I was interested in the film itself but because it starred Johnny Depp.

Yes, he is gorgeous and very charming and one of my favourite actors.

So I went to see it at the weekend and I got bored towards the end. Despite the fact that Public Enemies comes with A-list actors it fails to keep you entertained after the first hour.

I heard one man saying 'Oh thank God he is dead' when the movie ended and I didn't blame him. Who wants to sit for 90 minutes just to watch federal agents numerous failed attempts at catching a bank robber?

There are a lot of shoot outs and night time chases but that is it. There is no drama and no scenes grab your full attention, except maybe at the end where he was about to be killed.

The story begins in 1933 when John Dillinger (Depp) plans an escape for his gang members from an Indiana prison and ends with his death at the hands of the federal agents on the streets of Chicago 14 months later.

In between he robs several banks, travels a lot, buys lots of cars to be used in the various robberies and falls in love with Billie Frechette (Cotillard) who he promises to protect but of course fails miserably.

Melvin Purvis (Bale) is the FBI agent charged with bringing Dillinger down. He is a serious man who is determined to catch the thief and forms a team of strong and experienced agents to get the job done as quickly as possible.

It should be a good movie but, as I said, I was disappointed with it and I don't recommend it as I suspect other viewers will be too.

However, if you are really interested just rent it when it becomes available on DVD. Showing in: Seef II, Saar Cineplex and Al Jazeera Cineplex
