If you want to visit the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve but aren't keen on staying so far from civilisation, take a look at the One and Only Royal Mirage for all the luxury without the lizards.
With 466 rooms spread over three venues, The Palace, the Residence and Spa and Arabian Court, the Royal Mirage offers first class service with more than 1,000 smiling staff ready and willing to help in any way they can to make your stay memorable.
Arriving in the late evening, I had a delicious room service meal of steak sandwich and salad, served complete with crisp white linens, silverware and fresh flowers all on a mobile table.
If you're feeling a bit more sociable you can try, among others, north African eaterie Tagine, which is akin to a home in old Marrakech, Nina, which specialises in Indo-European cuisine or, my personal favourite, the Beach Bar and Grill where the meat and seafood are truly mouthwatering.
A big plus for visitors from Bahrain is the hotel's full kilometre of private white sand beach where smiling attendants regularly keep you topped up with iced water and the sea is the perfect temperature for a refreshing swim.
And, of course, don't forget the acres of landscaped grounds, complete with roaming peacocks, and over-21s venue Kasbar one of the favourite nightspots in town with a resident DJ providing contemporary, modern and traditional Arabic music into the early hours.
I flew to Dubai business class courtesy of Emirates and, I have to say, it's easy to see why this airline has won so many awards.
