Chelsea surge ahead with Drogba double

Arsene Wenger had spent much of the week criticising FIFA for removing the ban on Chelsea buying players in the January transfer window. He may have been better off spending his time looking for players himself, particularly in the striking department.

Arsenal, with Wenger at the helm, runs the club very differently from its 'upmarket' rivals. Whilst Chelsea have a multi-millionaire backing their every move and a growing debt bigger then some small countries, Arsenal try to spend within their means especially after a very expensive stadium move.

This philosophy, though, has consequences for matters on the field and this was none so more obvious than on Sunday when the squads of each team looked miles apart. With Anelka and Drogba upfront for Chelsea and nobody leading the line for Arsenal, except a plethora of attacking midfielders, the end result of 3-0 looked exactly like what it should be.

No matter what any manager hints at or argues, without quality strikers it is virtually impossible to win big games against top quality opposition. Arsenal will do OK this season but unless they find a centre forward, maybe even two in the transfer window, then it is likely to be another trophy-less season for the Gunners.

Whilst Van Persie's misfortune to be out for five months might appear unlucky, there are not many onlookers who did not think the Frenchman was running this kind of risk the moment he chose not to strengthen his squad in the summer.

As usual, Arsenal started brightly with their slick passing game dominating the midfield but, alas, with little penetration. This has the unfortunate consequence of building the confidence of the opposition as the more possession secured by Chelsea the greater the threat they posed.

Ancelotti has managed to build on the work of Gus Hiddink and make the partnership of Drogba and Anelka one of the most potent strike forces in world football. Only Torres and Villa for Spain can match their threat.

Just before half time former Arsenal player Ashley Cole provided the perfect cross for Drogba to side foot home to give the visitors the lead. More misery was to come moments later when again Cole crossed from the left and Thomas Vermaelen deflected into his own net.

The second half saw Arsenal surging forward to make amends and, but for a disallowed goal, they may have found themselves back in this game. However, the referee saw an infringement and this virtually finished off any hopes of victory. With gaps at the back they could have conceded more goals and a Drogba free kick sealed what was in reality a fairly comfortable victory for Chelsea.

This win puts Chelsea 13 points clear of Liverpool, 11 of Arsenal and five from closest rivals Manchester United. As important, though, is that they have beaten all three of them without conceding a goal and their goal difference of 28 gives a clear indication of the ability to score goals and defend at the same time.

With home games against Everton, Portsmouth and Fulham along with away fixtures at Blackburn, Man City, Birmingham and West Ham before the end of the year it is difficult to see where they are going to drop many points. This league title race could be over by January if Manchester United has a dip in form.

Chelsea may well be losing some significant players to the African Nations in the New Year but, as Wenger suspects, with the transfer ban suspended Ancelotti may well be buying big in the window knowing that they may not well be able to bring in new recruits for some time.

Even if the Italian does not buy new players the squad looks deep enough to protect a 10 point cushion if that is what they manage to build up by the time the likes of Drogba and Essien leave.

Whilst the philosophies of the two clubs are very different it will be Ancelotti waking up this morning with very few things to worry about and only a glorious season in prospect.

Wenger, meanwhile, has a number of problems he needs solutions for and if another season goes by without a trophy then some will start to question the wisdom of his approach, not least his captain Cesc Fabregas. With Barcelona and Madrid hoping to snap him up this could be a significant issue at the end of the season.
