Dear Stan, Two young boys came into the sanctuary this week to donate BD94 they raised in a self-initiated badminton-a-thon. Is there any chance a short article could make it into GulfWeekly?

Sport-loving schoolboys Harry Bricklebank and Daniel Horler have made a point of raising money to help abandoned animals in Bahrain. The big-hearted 10-year-olds staged a three-hour non-stop badminton charity match and residents of their Barbar compound came out in force to cheer them on.

Daniel said: 'We were just bored and didn't have anything much to do that day and while we were playing we came up with the idea and thought, OK, let's do it!'

Animal lovers Harry, who has three dogs, and Daniel, who has a pet cat, agreed on helping the Bahrain Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BSPCA) to support its sanctuary in Saar.

Harry's mum Kirsten, said: 'We were stunned when they came and told us about their badminton-thon plan.

'They were determined to complete the task and we are very proud of their achievement.'

The St Christopher's School students raised BD94 from their efforts. A BSPCA spokesman said: 'We would really like to celebrate this kind of fund-raising as well as congratulate the boys on their initiative and stamina. Their effort to help the shelter animals is greatly appreciated.'

The boys have now set their hearts on completing a 'double dare' with a six-hour game at a future date.

Dear Stan,

With reference to your back page story regarding the Bahrain football team headlined Smile Though Your Heart Is Aching.

I would be grateful if I could share my comments and raise the issue again of the World Cup defeat in New Zealand.

You don't need luck to win a football match. You need to play to win. The country's sporting leaders were right when they said that manager Macala was not to be blamed. The players were responsible.

It's like an examination at school - the coach was the teacher and he and his staff prepared the team the best way they could. That fixture was like the final exam - you are on your own and no-one is going to help you.

Sorry Bahrain, I will never put my foot in a coffee shop again to watch you guys. The players let down everyone in Bahrain - the King, The Prime Minister, the Bahrainis and the expat Bahrain fans.

David Bell,

Adliya.

Dear Stan,

Absolutely, without a shadow of doubt, Adam must be home with his mother.

Dear Stan,

With reference to last week's TravelWeekly article about the Lordies Lodge in Regina Gardens, Cyprus.

I had to write to say - wow - what a fabulous holiday home just feet away from the pool - we had the best of everything when we stayed last summer. The villa had everything, we enjoyed the home comforts and didn't venture far and the air-con certainly kept us cool.

It had such a friendly atmosphere too, we met some lovely people, both holidaying and living there. We will certainly recommend it to others.

Dear Stan,

Big things are afoot for the British Club netball scene this season and with the launch of their new kit, they are sure to add to their hopes of securing another win this season – and in style!

The growing netball club now has three teams with the A and B teams fighting ferociously in the first league along with some of the country’s other social clubs, and a very happy social team adding that little extra smile in league two to the currently ‘chilly’ evenings! Indeed, the indomitable A team has remained on top of this game and resolutely unvanquished for four seasons, with hopes high in the battle to make it a fifth.

Looking good (and playing well) has never been made more easy through the much appreciated support of OC Sports, a sports event and management company based in Bahrain. The British Club would like to extend a huge and heartfelt thanks to OC Sports – the next goal’s for you!

Comprising of players from all corners of the globe, including New Zealand, Canada, Britain and Lebanon, the spirit has never been so strong and with practice on Sundays and matches on Tuesdays, make sure you come on down and show some good old ‘British’ support!

Louise Brown,

Bahrain.
