THE kingdom's expat football league is now officially underway with each team playing for vital points and the chance of holding aloft the inaugural GulfWeekly Premiership Trophy.

The first set of league fixtures kicked-off last Monday with the British School of Bahrain (BSB) matched up against the highly-fancied Rugby Club and St Christopher's School taking on the mighty Dilmun Club.

According to league chairman and BSB captain Paul Millington, the opening match was a closely-contested affair. He said: "The game was settled with a goal in each half by Andy Hinson and a sweetly struck shot by key midfielder Adel Glia midway through the second half giving the Rugby Club a 2-0 win.

"However, for long periods the British School managed to nullify the threat posed by a well-organised and skillful set of players."

The second match pitted the Dilmun Club against St Chris, a side still smarting from a 5-0 friendly loss the previous week. Sadly for the teachers, however, they were to fare even worse and were hit for six.

The 6-0 win cemented the Dilly's early position at the top of the league. Their goals were scored by Steve Rutter, Garry Baker, Dave Lord along with a double strike by the impressive Eamon Egan, who is now a marked man having made a 'free transfer' before the contest start from Wahoo!

Organisers also wanted to make a special mention about Dilmun goalkeeper Walshy who stood in at the last minute. Club captain Lord believes that his side's strength lies in the 'nice kit'.

Paul added: "Overall, it was a good start to the league by two of the fancied sides; next up is the eagerly anticipated derby match between the British Club and AC Jurassic followed by Wahoo against the Saar Eagles."

Fans are welcome to attend fixtures taking place every Monday between 7pm and 9pm at the British School of Bahrain's artificial football pitch.
