MODEL schoolgirl Hannah Kent was plucked from a crowd of movie fans to meet the stars of Avatar during their surprise visit to Bahrain ... thanks to a superhero costume she had worn to a charity fund-raising day at school.
As GulfWeekly revealed last week, the film's cast and executives including James Cameron, Jon Landau, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez and John David Cameron called in to port to support the 5th Fleet servicemen and women.
They spent time meeting, greeting, signing autographs and having their photographs taken before a special screening of the record-breaking movie at Naval Support Activity Bahrain.
Hannah, 15, from Saar, managed to get an invitation to the event with family and friends thanks to classmate Kate Whatley, 14, one of the scores of children of US Navy personnel studying at Bahrain School who have taken advantage of the relaxation of rules allowing service families to return to the kingdom.
"One minute I was having my snap taken in front of the stage and the next I was being ushered on to it to meet the stars," said Hannah. "I think my Superman costume made me stand out from the crowd!"
Hannah had donned a Superman-style T-shirt which actually had the words 'Superdad' emblazoned on it, used a rolled-up shirt as a cape and borrowed her big sister Miranda's blue trousers for the finishing touch to a costume she sported for a 'superhero day' at her school.
Teachers had allowed pupils to wear costumes as part of a fund-raising initiative to help stricken victims of the Haiti earthquake disaster. More than BD400 was raised.
Hannah said: "Although everyone was really generous not many students actually wore a costume but I didn't mind looking silly for a good cause. I didn't get time to change as we rushed straight over to the base after school. It proved lucky for me though! There must have been a crowd of more than 600-strong when John Landau tapped me on the shoulder and invited me to come up on stage - it was so cool!"
The Academy Award-winning producer revealed to her that the success of Avatar was the culmination of a "16-18 hours-a-day work schedule over a four-year period" by the team.
Mr Landau has repeatedly demonstrated an ability to oversee and deliver major motion pictures. Industry insiders say the combination of his thorough understanding of complex visual effects technologies, his ability to work hand-in-hand with the highest calibre of creative talent, and his motivational ability with crews of all sizes has enabled him to play a significant role in numerous major motion pictures.
As well as working on the production on the critically-acclaimed James Cameron film, Avatar, Mr Landau has also produced such films as Cameron's Titanic and Steven Soderbergh's Solaris.
In the past, he co-produced Warren Beatty's Dick Tracy and the family comedy hit Honey, I Shrunk The Kids.
Throughout the early 1990s, Mr Landau was executive vice-president of Feature Film Production at Twentieth Century Fox.
Avatar has now broken the previous all-time record-holder Titanic to become the highest domestic grossing film ever with $601.1 million. It beat Titanic's $600.8 million record last week after earning nine Academy Award nominations, including picture and director.
According to Variety, the film also holds the record as the highest worldwide grosser with a current cumulative of more than $2.05 billion.
As Hannah was chatting to the movie millionaire up popped another Hollywood legend saying: "Hi, what's your name?" She told the actress who replied: "Nice to meet you, I'm Sigourney" which prompted an immediate response from Hannah: "I know!"
Golden Globe-winner Sigourney Weaver happily posed for photographs with Hannah and her friends Kate and Nazli Umay, 15, also from Budaiya.
Before departing, Mr Landau signed Hannah's 'superdad' shirt 'To Dave from John Landau' and she presented it to her father David, an oil field service industry executive.
The pictures of Hannah with the stars have now been added to the albums of images of the young model taken by her mother, professional portrait photographer, Jacqueline.
Hannah has recently followed in the modelling footsteps of her 17-year-old sister who regularly appears in glossy magazines features.
Both girls also appear on the catwalk for fashion houses, in advertising promotions and at charity fund-raising shows.
