Saar Eagles pulled off a thrilling 3-2 victory against AXA Rugby Club in the last GulfWeekly Premiership Trophy league clash.
The AXA boys were returning to action after their last match with the Jurassics ended in a stalemate and the Eagles were hoping to put a disappointing 5-1 thrashing at the hands of the Dilmun Club behind them.
Both teams had a lot to prove and passions, as expected, ran high. The opening stages saw the usual meaty challenges expected of a local derby and the opening 10-minute period was short on rhythm. Out of the blue came the opening goal and it went the way of the Eagles.
A couple of sweet passes ended with Dan Niemeyer firing a low ground shot into the bottom corner and the crowd of supporters went wild chanting 'Eagles, Eagles' as the Rugby Club's so-called 'b team' put their A-list playmates in their place .
The teams regrouped for the kick off and seemed to cancel each other out until the Rugby Club's Derek 'Del Boy' Rodney gathered the ball on the right, passed two players and rattled the ball past the outstretched hand of Eagles goalkeeper Mike Tieney.
Within five minutes on his arrival on the pitch, the first of the Eagles subs Sam Awadh caught the ball well and strode into the area to finish low and hard in the net - completing the half with the Eagles bucking the bookies trend and going in 2-1.
In the second half, the Eagles rifled in a shot from Mickie Marr which came back off the post and in off the keeper to increase his side's lead.
The game looked all over but in the dying minutes the Rugby Club's Mwariunesu Gamira ran on to a through ball and fired home with a clinical finish to bring the score back to 3-2.
The last few minutes saw a shot by Louie Marr disallowed and when the final whistle was blown a long night of celebrations started on the Eagles bench.
