Gulf Air's head of information technology infrastructure Dr Jassim Haji has been awarded the Professional Doctorate of Business Administration (PhD) by the University of Northumbria at Newcastle, UK for his exceptional research work that focuses on issues foreign companies face while operating in Bahrain.

The research, considered first of its kind on this subject in the region, has taken an American company EDS as a case study in which Dr Haji worked for over 10 years.

The study analyses in depth, the impact of the national culture of host countries on the operations of multinational companies, while providing guidelines and a framework on what American companies should take into consideration while venturing to set up business in Bahrain.

It throws valuable insight in to the alienation and resentment that arises when organisational culture is imposed on the local work force in Bahrain, without understanding the cultural influences that define them.

Dr Haji has developed a practice-based framework by integrating influencing factors into policy-making process, thus providing a practical guide to American companies setting out to do business in the Middle East, as well as to local government's policy-makers in the Middle East.

Congratulating Dr Haji, Gulf Air CEO Samer Majali said: "The achievement has brought credit to Bahrain and all Bahrainis. His painstaking research will be of great benefit to the kingdom and Gulf Air."
