Cooking with steam provides for healthy nutrition and does not necessarily mean giving up your favourite dishes, writes Shilpa Chandran.

Using steam, you can enjoy your vegetables, fish and other food without a gram of fat.

A steamer offers a healthy cooking option as it preserves most of the natural vitamins, mineral salts and other nutrients vital for good health.

Dieticians say eating steamed food - whether vegetable, fruits or fish - will help those who want to lose weight or those on a diet to control diseases such as hypertension or diabetes, sometimes caused by following an unhealthy lifestyle.

Steaming is also the way to get the best taste of the food as individual ingredients do not lose their natural taste, smell, colour or texture.

Thanks to its booster, Tefal, the maker's of a new steamer called Steam Cuisine Vitamin+, claim it can save up to 50 per cent on the amount of time on steaming and it will preserve more vitamins than any other.

"When steaming broccoli you save up to 86 per cent of the vitamins with Vitamin+ vs 67 per cent on a traditional steamer," a spokesman claimed.

"It is also very convenient to use. You can prepare a complete meal, regardless of the type of dish, from a starter to a dessert thanks to the three tiers. And, they are easily stored because the tiers are stackable.

"Food does not get over-cooked and so does not require watching and an automatic timer turns the device off at a previously programmed time."
