Jim shines in the rain

In the pouring rain of Atlanta Jim Furyk overcame a late wobble to win the Tour Championship and pocket a staggering 6.4million pound bonus as the overall FedEx Cup champion.

The victory also signaled the end of another thrilling season on the PGA Tour in the States.

The American, three strokes ahead with three holes to play, bogeyed 16 and 17 before parring the last to clinch his 16th PGA Tour title and third of the year. Ryder Cup rival Luke Donald had already carded a final round 70 before Furyk teed off on the last.

However, a delicate up and down out of the sand prompted uncharacteristically wild celebrations from Furyk, as Donald was forced to settle for a second-placed finish one shot back.

From there, the two contenders made a quick getaway to join up with their teammates for the long-awaited and much anticipated 2010 Ryder Cup matches in Wales.

The Europeans have enjoyed a superb season and will start as favourites on home soil. Ten of Monty's 12 players have tasted victory during the qualifying process with both Graeme McDowell and Martin Kaymer opening their major accounts along the way.

They will not have it all their own way though; the American side has shown some excellent form during the past two months and many of them are on top of their game, Jim Furyk becoming the latest member of Captain Pavin's side to win. Hunter Mahan, Matt Kuchar and Dustin Johnson have all triumphed in recent weeks so it is still anyone's guess how it will go.

Factor in the pressure, the weather, the course and the crowds and all of the ingredients are there for a memorable three days of golf in the south of Wales.

Colin Montgomerie said he has already told his players who they will be playing with and also revealed the sequence of matches. The skipper has also said he will field all 12 of his side on the opening day.

This shows that he doesn't want to be a secretive leader and he wants his players to know what is happening wherever possible.

He is not bound by what he has decided so far but it would be more awkward to unravel partnerships should the need arise.

Right now we are left to wonder which four players will be on the tee when it happens and it's an extraordinary thought that Monty already knows the identity of the two who will be there in Europe's colours.

I am sure that Corey Pavin is wondering who will be there for the Americans as well.

My money would be on the most controversial picks from either team being asked to lead their sides into action; Padraig Harrington and Tiger Woods.

Montgomerie sees Harrington as his on course leader, much the role that the Scot himself took when he played. A 64 in the final round in Paris last weekend clearly shows that he is finding his form and there is a natural pairing occuring with the talented, young Luke Donald.

Tiger has had a couple of weeks off after failing to qualify for the Tour Championship, but he has spent that time working hard to find his game.

There have been signs of the old magic returning and what better environment than at a Ryder Cup with the eyes of the world looking on to prove the doubters wrong. Of course, it could go the other way as well! There is also a natural pairing with the US Teams 'Mr Reliable', Steve Stricker.

Both players are on-course leaders and they have to lead by example. Both teams are packed full of some of the best golfers in the world at the moment - the difference between their level of skill is small, so it is all to play for.

The main priority for the captians now is to get their men in the right frame of mind and get them to the first tee.

After the first ball is struck there is not much more they can do.

Nothing gets the anticipation fowing like a Ryder Cup; whether you are from Europe, the US or are a neutral, the highly entertaing matches offer a unique atmosphere and unparalleled excitement.

Hold on to you horses, its all ready to go!
