Dr. Arroway is a gifted scientist, encouraged as a child by her father, who has long since passed away. She works for the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) programme at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico. She and her colleagues listen to radio transmissions in hope of finding signals sent by extraterrestrial life and one day, the unexpected happens, she finds proof of life.

When blackmailed by someone who has discovered his secret, Thad publically 'buries' George Stark. From that point on, Thad becomes the prime suspect in a series of gruesome murders.
