A wallet for diabetics

THERE is now a smart and lightweight answer to the hefty ice boxes and worries over keeping medications cool ... a new medication wallet.

The new FRIO container does not need ice or refrigeration and is available in a variety of sizes and colours from selected pharmacies in Bahrain starting from under BD10.

Research shows that if insulin is not stored at below 30 degrees, it can become unusable and harm patients. In the extreme heat of the Middle East, this can be a major concern to diabetics and their consultants.

"The wallets are, quite simply, revolutionising the way that insulin dependent diabetics live their lives, by giving them a 'new lease of life' - they now have the freedom to enjoy the outdoors and travel without worrying about whether their medication will be OK," said Susan Reader, director of AIMS (MENA), who has brought the British Medical Devices Association and FDA certification approved cooling wallets to the region.

The wallets are lightweight, compact and work simply on 'evaporative cooling'. Soak the wallet in cold water for just five minutes, take medication from the refrigerator, place inside the wallet and go! The wallet remains active for a minimum of 45 hours and is re-usable continually for many years.

Extensive testing throughout the GCC has proven their effectiveness in the extreme heat, said Mrs Reader.
