Gulf Weekly PHOTO COMPETITION WINNER

GulfWeekly photographer Ryan Bayona made the newspaper team proud when he took the joint top prize at the 2011 Ramadan Photo Contest organised by the American Embassy in co-ordination with Al Riwaq Art Space.

His winning photograph, pictured right, depicts worshippers walking outside after Thursday night prayers at the Al Fateh Grand Mosque in Juffair.

Ryan, 31, from Hoora, said: “This is my first win in a competition. I attended the event just to check out the competition as I could meet fellow photographers and see their work. Some of my friends suggested that I join in and I did, just for fun. I never expected to win. I am extremely happy that I did and that my photograph was chosen.”

Ryan’s entry was one of four photographs which depicted Eid El-Fitr celebrations in Bahrain. These photos will be published by the Embassy on the cover of its 2011 Eid card to recognise the photographers’ achievements.

He was presented with a certificate of achievement by the US Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Stephen Seche who congratulated all four winners, including Nujood Al Mahmood, Alyaa Jaafar and Ali Qais.

Each of the winners were awarded a Sony ‘Bloggie’ Flip Camcorder.
