BAHRAIN and former England Under-21 coach Peter Taylor was guest of honour at a special under-eights football tournament at the Sports City Stadium near Janabiya on Saturday.

The Arsenal Soccer School Bahrain (ASSB) event involved more than 50 youngsters from the school joined by a team from the Bahrain Rugby Club. It was also the first time the school had invited outside teams to take part in an internal event.

In traditional event style, the players picked a bib colour from a bag to determine which team they would be on and, including the Rugby Club, seven teams participated in a series of eight versus eight matches.

Taylor, the man who picked David Beckham to captain England for the first time whilst in charge of the full England team for one match, is enjoying a successful spell as Bahrain National Team manager.

He watched the children in action and presented the awards, saying he was impressed with the quality of play and potential on show.

Director Paul Shipwright added: “It was a privilege to have Peter come to our event and show his support for the soccer school. All the children were very excited and it was a fantastic addition to a great morning of football.

“We would like to thank Peter for his time with us and also to the Rugby Club for giving their children the opportunity to join in our competition. We were delighted with the huge turn out of our players and the fantastic support by the mums, dads, brothers and sisters of the players.”

Each team played every other team once in a league format. Arsenal Yellow finished top and in a very close contest, the runner -up spot was decided on goal difference with Arsenal Green narrowly topping Arsenal Red.
