THE music industry seems to have recently
suffered what I would call a ‘Bayern Munich moment’ by losing some cherished
items which were much-loved and will be sorely missed.
First let us mention the passing of Crowded
House drummer Peter Jones who left us aged just 45, the Liverpool-born member
of that wonderful Australian indie-rock band.
Not long before this, the lady famed for
having the ‘ultimate female disco voice’ also passed away – Donna Summer who
was 63. Her list of hits reads like the back of a disco essentials album.
But the reason for this week’s Music Box is
because just this morning I was awoken by my phone ringing I quickly came to my
senses after the words: ‘Robin Gibb has died’ were spoken.
The Bee Gees made a huge impact on the
entire music scene, as although there are still major arguments as to which
were the very first disco songs, I think everybody agrees that the soundtrack
to Saturday Night Fever was the lynch pin that pulled it all together.
Originally formed in 1958, the Bee Gees
have amassed over 200 million album sales worldwide and let us not forget the
immense amount of songs they wrote for pretty much every major performer at one
time or another.
I’m sure I could fill several pages with a
history of all three musicians and their colleagues, but instead let us
remember the best they had to offer:
Crowded House – Weather With You, Don’t
Dream It’s Over.
Donna Summer – I Feel Love, Hot Stuff, Bad
Girls, Last Dance, On My Radio, Love’s Unkind, No More Tears (Enough Is
Enough).
Bee Gees – You Should Be Dancing, Stayin
Alive, Jive Talkin’, Night Fever, More Than A Woman, Tragedy.
Let me leave you with a quote from the
movie Lord of The Rings: The journey doesn’t end here – death is just another
path we all must take.
