In 2008 the non-profit organisation Peace One Day (POD) launched an international art competition and created The Peace Quilt Project.
POD is working to raise awareness of the United Nations International Day of Peace held annually on September 21.
Schools from all over the world were invited to create a picture that signifies peace and include a sentence about peace as well as their country flag. This project has been on-going for four years and culminates on World Peace Day 2012.
Students of Year 5, Year 6 and of St Christopher’s Senior School were given the opportunity to submit a drawing to represent Bahrain in this project.
The winning drawing, along with all the drawings from schools around the world, were transferred onto cotton and joined together to form one quilt of world unity – The Peace Quilt.
The aim is to have this quilt completed and displayed at the London Olympics, 2012 where countries from all over the world enjoy unity in sport.
The drawing submitted by St Christopher’s School, pictured below, Bahrain was given the fitting title ‘Peace in Our Hands’.
The students are thrilled to have had the opportunity to contribute towards a world-wide initiative that unites children from all across the globe, in peace.

GulfWeekly recently reported that the British Club was considering staging a panto this year. It gave the impression that the Dilmun Club would not and it’s just a shame the Whisperer didn’t ask anyone on the committee as this has recently been discussed.
I understand the general feeling amongst the committee was to see what the members want, which in my view is a good call.
The Dilly panto has always been run by the members for the members, with a few guests attached. So, I would like to ask members if they would like to see the panto resurrected.
The thought is to do one of the traditional pantos. I have looked at a couple of scripts, Aladdin and Cinderella look to be the most suitable.
Most people also know these well-loved stories. I would like to point out that everyone is welcome and it doesn’t matter if you’ve had experience before or not, I can assure you it is great fun and a good way to make new friends.
So if you fancy giving this a go, please email anne.huggett@yahoo.co.uk if you would like to take part in any way.
We do appreciate that it is hard to commit so early in the year, at this stage this is just getting an idea if there is enough interest. If there is, we can select the right sort of script and get started early in September.
We look forward to a response and wish GulfWeekly readers all a happy summer holidays, oh yes we do.
