Fitness guru Dalia Al Sadiqi is warning food junkies not to fall into the trap of overindulgence this Ramadan and is training health conscious fasters to stay fit through a combination of exercise and moderation.

The 26-year-old personal trainer from Manama has seen it all before … as soon as the sun sets, people gather around the table ready to feast until their belly buttons pop.

Dalia, a former Ibn Khuldoon National School pupil, said: “Watch what you eat. Eat healthily, drink loads of water and try to avoid desserts high in sugar – especially those delicious Arabic sweets!

“Try to control your carbohydrate intake and also make sure you also have plenty of protein; it is the key component of building muscle especially after workouts. It will also keep you full and satisfy your hunger. Protein is an important nutrient when trying to lose weight, build muscle and live a healthier lifestyle.

“Watch your calorie intake too. Do not overeat just because you know that you will need to fast tomorrow. If you mess up, all your efforts to stay in shape at the gym will go to waste.

“Do exercise during Ramadan. People tend to become lazy and believe that just because it’s Ramadan it is a month off their training schedule. You should never stop keeping in shape.

“Break your fast with something light, like a couple of dates or a protein shake and then head to the gym. Once you’re done with your workout then have a proper meal. Try not to train immediately after having a huge meal. If you just eaten a huge meal wait an hour or two before hitting the gym.”

Dalia also advised that in order to see the best results, whether it is during Ramadan or throughout the year, to workout at least three days a week.

Dalia has been certified to train privately by the American Council of Exercise, specialising in strength and conditioning through weight training. She is also the only certified Bahraini female kettle bell trainer in the kingdom.
