The all-new 2013 Nissan Altima is steadily cruising towards its goal of altering perceptions of what drivers can expect from a mid-sized sedan.
While some drivers look for a sporty model to turn heads and others enjoy the rugged capabilities of a bulking SUV, the vast majority simply want a reliable runner to commute to work or ferry their family around at the weekend.
Those seeking the latter may get more than they bargain for if they opt for the new Altima.
It is a modern and charismatic vehicle, offering quality and reliability while adding new levels of innovation, fuel-efficiency, dynamic performance and style, its makers say.
I’m sure the new Altima hasn’t been on the Atkins diet but it has lost an impressive 124 pounds when compared to its predecessor. The boot, bonnet and roof are now aluminium and the body uses more high-strength steel, which gives the model a sturdy feel.
Inside, the car is comfortable, roomy and quiet, details that matter when making your weekly rounds around the island, which, more often than not, end up with a few traffic jams thrown in for good measure.
The model I drove had creamy suede-looking seats and offered an ample amount of leg room to make those journeys as comfortable as possible. And those journeys begin with utilising the remote central locking and a quick tap of the push-start ignition.
In terms of onboard features there was a Bluetooth hands free feature, USB connectivity, cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, rear view camera, LCD 5-inch display as well as a CD player and radio. There are also many more options available with different variants including the 2.5-litre engine models – 2.5 S, 2.5 SV and 2.5 SL, along with two 3.5-litre V6 models – 3.5 SV and 3.5 SL.
I had the privilege of driving the 2.5-litre SV X tronic CVT model, which offered ample power and delivered a smooth ride as I cruised through Adliya.
The rear view camera came in very handy as I negotiated a tight reverse park and it still boggles my mind why all cars don’t have this feature.
Since safety is a prime concern, the 2013 Altima steps up its game. The model I drove boasted dual air bags for driver and passenger, immobiliser and alarm, anti-lock brakes, electronic brake distribution, brake assist, traction control system and active under-steer control.
My overall impression was one of total competence. The Altima delivers what most drivers are looking for in terms of daily commuting.
The 2013 Altima comes with a warranty for three years/100,000km, whichever is earlier.
Prices start from BD8,495.
