Pet peeves about UK adoption

Since we were young, my brother and I have luckily always experienced the companionship that comes from owning a pet.

From cats to dogs, hamsters to parrots it is fair to say that we have been through our fair share of pets.

Recently, we have been adopted by a cat, who instead of being brought home by us from an animal shelter, simply wandered into our house one day and decided not to leave.
Adopting strays as pets seems almost commonplace here compared to in the UK. Recently, some family friends of ours tried adopting a dog from the famous Battersea Dogs Home in London.

Instead of simply naming the dog and instantly whisking it home to be showered with affection, they had to go through a grueling  audition process in which they (along with the dog) where observed in different scenarios. They also had to endure a thorough interview process.

Unfortunately, our friends were deemed unsuitable for the dog they wished to adopt and where unable to take it home as a pet.

Of course, in Bahrain we have a number of agencies that try to find new homes for strays.

The difference is if you wish to adopt a pet, you simply turn up to these places with good intentions and you’ll find yourself a new four-legged friend.
