Monsoon has begun its 40th anniversary festivities with the limited edition Heritage collection, which is just one part of a year-long celebration. Inspired by archive textiles, silhouettes and with a particular reference to Indian block printing, the collection has a distinct 1970s feel, the renowned fashion house says.

Its designs feature embroidery and embellishment that holds a handcrafted feel and reflects traditional Indian techniques. Bejewelled necklines and hems are teamed with prints to add a richness and quality to the pieces. Metal components have an aged finish to add a look of antiquity, while threadwork is combined with woven fabrics to create a strong textile statement.

Monsoon’s new spring summer collection is also refined and contemporary with its bohemian roots, accented by custom-inspired pieces that will be treasured for generations, its makers claim.

Trophy jackets are quilted with ethnic prints in pops of pink and ochre. Floral prints in washed pastels mix with soft grey and neutrals for a softer look as cotton laces, chambrays and yarns highlight the beauty of natural fabrics. There are also garments with blurred effects of colour including watercolour jersey stripes, space dye yarns and subtle ombre’s.

For later in the season, the purity of white is teamed with the rich jewel colours of the peacock feather. The maxi dress and skirt in block printed cottons are inspired by the styling of Monsoon’s 1970s photo shoots. Oversize paisleys, subtle lurex fabrics and intricate embellishment give a sense of daytime shimmer with peasant tops and kaftans.

A sense of romantic nostalgia is introduced with softly-laundered fabrics and key separates in washed cottons. Bohemian floral prints and embroidery offer a vintage air in a fresh delicate pastel colour palette with natural dyes.

Latin influences come together in both silhouette and fabrication for a touch of glamour and elegance. The collection boasts structured fabrics with oversized paisley prints taking on a lace-like appearance. Formal embroideries add weight, antiquity and texture to the pieces with statement-embellished necklines.

Dresses and separates are complimented by botanical florals in a pretty palette injected with pops of bright colour. Contemporary silhouettes deliver a modern versatile wardrobe and structured jacquard dresses along with matching jackets are key. Enamel components reflect the tropical palette and are mixed with metallic and diamante.

Monsoon’s Bridal collection consists of a range of stunning vintage-inspired gowns designed exclusively in-house. Lace, silk layers and embellished detailing in cream, ivory and silver shades can be seen on full and shorter lengths.

Moving on to beachwear, subtle craft details come together in an earthy palette accented by spice orange and monochrome. Ethnic patterns draw inspiration from Monsoon’s trademark style while ikat and ombre dyeing techniques offering a soft look.

Coloured embroidery and fringing is used as a trim back with print. Oversized shirt dresses, kaftans and printed trousers are presented in light and fluid fabrics.

High impact colour and elegance combine in a tribute to the iconic kaleidoscopic scarf patterns of the 1970s. Azure and lagoon blues reflect the colours of the Greek islands, with Grecian draped silhouettes. Draping and maxi lengths are seen in fluid jerseys and semi-sheer chiffons.

White and ivory natural fabrics are important summer essentials. A perfect celebration of Monsoon’s heritage, the artisan crafts and block prints are given a contemporary spin. For example, layering the iconic block print kaftan over an embellished bikini delivers a bohemian touch.

When it comes to children’s wear, this spring Monsoon’s Girlswear revels in fresh outdoor living. Nature has inspired hand-stencilled floral patterns and a shoreline palette of watery blues contrasted with grass green borders. Brush stroke watercolour florals, playful ditsys and polka dots are patched and colour blocked with embroidery and eclectic trims to create a fun bohemian look.

Partywear takes a pretty 20s and 30s twist. Nostalgic shapes have a subtle sheen and sparkling details. Voluminous silhouettes create a wonderful mix to start the wedding season. Beading on lace in bright corals gives freshness to fabrics and moves the collection on in a modern way.

Monsoon takes Boyswear to London for its first stop this season. T-shirts feature traditional London taxis, buses and Minis. Buildings are used to make up alphabet T-shirts and quirky slogans give a fun element. These bold authentic graphics are worn with relaxed fit rolled up chinos and a bright cardigan.

The second stop sees Boyswear go on safari in search of dinosaurs. Along with signature prints and traditional checks, graphics are inspired by exploring with maps and compasses. Hand drawn prints give a beautifully authentic feel and skinny chinos are teamed with bright graphic T-shirts and safari jackets.

Stores selling the Monsoon brand are in Bahrain City Centre (Tel. No. 17179704) and Seef Mall (17581804).
