A recipe for success

STYLE, performance and practicality are not often synonymous when it comes to cars, but on the rare occasions when they do combine, it is awe-inspiring.

The 2013 Nissan Pathfnder is a crossover SUV that seamlessly blends the space and capability of an off-road vehicle with the refned comfort of a sedan, and, when you add to the mix a plethora of hi-tech options, you have a recipe for success.

Available in eight variants, this is a model that offers a combination of options to suit everybody’s needs.

First impressions matter and the exterior of the fourth generation Pathfnder is a sight to behold. It’s undergone so many drastic revamps since its 1985 launch that you’d hardly believe they were the same marque, let alone model.

Rounder, sleeker and more aerodynamic curves emphasise the modern design, which is also refected in the stylish interior.

The fully loaded SL version I drove was packed with comfort and infotainment features including Traction Control System, anti-lock Braking System, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System with individual tyre pressure display, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, Brake assist, six airbags and Brake Override Technology.

Slip inside the cabin and you’re greeted by an alluring ambience, complimented by the luxurious cream leather seats, convenient driver-orientated lay out and fne fnishes. Located in the centre stack is an LCD colour touch-screen screen that displays 3D-effect graphics to relay key information to the driver and can be used to control most of the vehicle’s functions.

There is also a digital compass, 9GB Music Box hard drive, Bose audio system with FM/AM/CD and 12 speakers, steering-wheel position memory and driver’s seat and outside mirrors position memory.

This spacious seven-seater offers a long list of best-in-class and unique-to-class specifcations and features, including an around-view monitor, sliding adjustment for second row seating, a remote engine start and climate control front seats.

The rear seats can be folded down to offer more storage space and if you’re planning on moving home anytime soon, I’d recommend this model to make light work of the job.
To get the driving experience started, simply place your foot on the brake, tap the push start button and you’re in business.

A 3.5-litre V6 engine powers the Pathfnder and its CVT (continuously variable transmission) gearbox provides a smooth and economical drive whether you’re cruising along the highway or navigating treacherous off-road terrain.

As I hit the highway and put the V6 to the test, I was impressed with the steady handling, rapid acceleration and smooth ride. The high vantage point was also a defnite plus.
Despite being a relatively large vehicle, the Pathfnder doesn’t handle like a big car at all. In fact, it often felt like I was driving a sedan and it was only when reversing that I really took note of its size.

City driving is also a pleasure in this model, thanks in no small part to the impressive comfort features, which are an added bonus if you have children.

There are two headrest-mounted LCD monitors in the second row, so the youngsters (or young at heart) can watch movies or play computer games. Impressively, these two screens are completely independent, so each side gets its own movie or game so there’s no need to argue over what to watch.

The 2013 Pathfnder SL version costs BD16,500.
