Bahraini Abdulrahman Ghazi, known as B-Boy Huey Flava, battled his way into the regional final of a contest to be staged in Egypt in August thanks to his high-flying breaking style and killer execution on the dance floor.
The 19-year-old breaker boy, representing the Red Ant Army Crew, has been entertaining crowds with his street dance routines featuring toprock, downrock, freezes and power moves for the past seven years at different shows, store openings and online sites such as YouTube.
B-Boy Huey Flava, from Zayed Town, went up against 15 other breakers including his friend and crew member Jawhar Khalid Zitouna aka B-Boy Zilla in a freestyle series of dance-offs at the Isa bin Salman Cultural Hall in Adliya.
The aim was to win a ticket to Cairo to Red Bull BC One’s Middle East and Africa Regional Final as the hunt continues for the next breaker world champion. His next task will be to take on winners in other countries for the chance to attend the World Final Cypher Series held in Seoul, South Korea, on November 28.
B-Boy Huey Flava said: “I love to dance. I watched the style of breaking on television and on the internet, but my friend B-Boy Zilla inspired me to dance.
“My flava and swag is what caught the judges’ eyes, especially since I have different moves and I am not scared to try new things. My dream is like any other dancer’s dream - to rise to the top!”
The breaker has already won numerous crew competitions and solos, not to mention the Red Bull BC One Bahrain Cypher’s in 2008 and 2009. B-Boy Huey Flava added: “It’s an honour to win again and I hope to represent my country and make my crew proud on the international stage. I don’t know who I will go up against but I am training every day for three to four hours in the studio in Hamala to elevate my performance.
“B-Boy Zilla has also been by my side giving me advice on what to expect in the competition as he won the title with Red Bull last year and competed in Morocco.”
B- Boy Zilla, 25, from Busaiteen, said: “The judges look for someone who is original and with lots of dynamic energy. You need to bring something new to the stage and that is what will get their attention.
“I’m proud of him and although we compete together we are still like brothers and look out for each other.”
The boys performed to the funky break beats of DJ Mr Tee in front of screaming fans and a jury panel of three of the best breaking stars in the world – B-Boy Taisuki, B-Boy Lamin and B-Boy Roxrite. The judges assessed the participants on technique, innovation and dance flow. The event was held in partnership with Almoayyed Motors, the dealers of Ford in Bahrain, Virgin Megastore, Union Press and Diva Hotel.
B-Boys were not the only ones participating in the freestyle competition, as one lucky twitter user won a trip for two to the regional finals offered by Ford, while another won a Ford Focus for the weekend.
Sandeep Mathur, general manager at Almoayyed Motors, said: “We are delighted to have sponsored such an event that encourages the talents of the local youth and to be part of a movement that furthers the passions of young Bahrainis.
“We would like to congratulate the winner, and wish him the very best in all his endeavours.”
