American Idol looks as though it’s becoming idle since viewership for the season finale dropped to a record low of 14.2 million and it’s judging panel has all but disbanded.
The rumour mill online is working overtime to guess who the new judging line-up will include following the departure of veteran judge Randy Jackson, Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey.
FOX confirmed the departure of Minaj and Carey in a statement.
“Nicki Minaj is a superstar who brought a level of honesty and passion to American Idol and who had a tremendous positive impact on so many contestants this season,” the network stated. “Given her extremely busy career, we understand and respect her decision and wish her the best.
“Mariah Carey is a true global icon – one of the most accomplished artists on the planet – and we feel extremely fortunate that she was able to bring her wisdom and experience to the contestants.”
Carey’s publicist Cindi Berger told ABC that the pop star is dropping the show for a newly-confirmed world tour, which is kicking off in Asia this autumn. She is also finishing up her latest album and acting in the movie The Butler.
Season 12 judge Keith Urban said he has ‘no official information’ on whether or not he will reclaim his seat on the panel next season.
Ryan Seacrest, who has hosted the show since its inception, said he plans to be back next season. He tweeted his well wishes to Minaj and Carey after their announcements.
“Thanks for the run Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj ... we’ll miss you,” he wrote, adding, “so whose mirror do I use now... and where will I get glitter from?”
