The German Embassy is organising a reception to celebrate German reunification and highlight business relationships in Bahrain, particularly with the kingdom’s successful automotive sector.

Although the Day of German Unity is traditionally observed on October 3, the event is being held on Friday at the ambassador’s residence in Saar due to Bahrain’s harsh late summer climate.

German Ambassador to Bahrain, Sabine Taufmann, said: “The Day of German Unity has always been a moment for remembering with gratitude how precious national unity is and how difficult it is to achieve.

“Germany has a good reputation as a reliable trading partner in the GCC region among which Bahrain has been a traditional partner.

“Bahrain is among the most modern and liberal economies and an attractive business location in the Gulf. Bahrain has adopted a consistent policy of economic diversification, the opening and liberalisation of its market, the excellent infrastructure and telecommunication as well as its proximity to important regional markets, and, of course, because of the very good investment conditions.

“Among the brands most easy to identify as ‘Made in Germany’ are, of course, German cars.

“They offer a unique blend of safety, speed and fine engineering.

“We appreciate that Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz are among the sponsors of the German reception.

“The other sponsor is DHL, the largest German company in Bahrain.”

As part of the celebrations, Euro Motors, the kingdom’s BMW dealer, will be offering an ‘attractive price’ on its 3 Series and 5 Series. The current offer on the BMW 3 Series is BD12,995 and the BMW 5 Series is BD16,995 – while stocks last.

Euro Motors was founded in 1998 and has been selling BMWs ever since and has seen a surge in demand in the last year with sales achieving 28 per cent growth.

BMW Group achieved its highest sales for the first six months of the year, with a total of 954,521 vehicles delivered worldwide, an increase of 6.0 per cent over the same period last year which was 900,566. Sales in June also reached an all-time high with 184,489 vehicles sold worldwide last month, an increase of 6.9 per cent over the previous year’s tally of 172,528.

Paul Yates, general manager, Euro Motors, said: “Over the last eight years, we have noticed a shift in the consumer behavioural pattern. People are now more inclined to go for the best quality with a view towards safer transport and improved comfort.

“At Euro Motors we have been promoting the essence of German luxury and ingenuity into the lifestyle of the local market for many years, and it has really become a perfect match. Now we aim to make the most recognised of German brands even more accessible with the introduction of this offer to provide great value and service, at prices that are extremely competitive.”

The German reunification (Deutsche Wiedervereinigung) was the process in 1990 in which the German Democratic Republic (GDR/East Germany) joined the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG/West Germany), and when Berlin reunited into a single city.

The most visual and perhaps most symbolic act that signified a united Germany was the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989.

The wall was a barrier constructed by the German Democratic Republic (GDR, East Germany) starting on August 13, 1961, that completely cut off West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and from East Berlin. It came to symbolise the ‘Iron Curtain’ that separated Western Europe and the Eastern Bloc during the Cold War.

When the wall fell people from both sides celebrated together, marking a new chapter in the country’s history.
