Gulf Weekly Korean Cup success

In sunny but slippery conditions, a field of nearly 90 players ventured forth at Awali Golf Club last Friday, to contest the first outing of The Korean Cup, an 18-hole individual Stableford competition.

Sliding on to the podium in first place was Keith Roberts with a whopping 43 points, two points clear of runners-up Anil Nair, Bill Scarth and Ahmed Al Noaimi all on 41 points.

The competition was sponsored by Kwang Bok Kim who, together with his wife Sang Oak Nam, are new members at Awali Golf Club, and who took the opportunity of sponsorship to introduce themselves.

As the first group played Hole-4 ‘Cardiac’, the pin was only just visible from the tee.

Throughout play there was unfamiliar reduced fairway roll due to the moist conditions, which also necessitated the introduction of temporary rules to avoid mud. Unfamiliar words were also to be heard along the lines of ‘ball lost in cabbage’, as greenery around the course had recently flourished.

Captain Steve Brown was on hand to be master of ceremonies, and part of his duties entailed the pleasant announcement that both the sponsors had recently gained their first handicap. Normally a happy affair for those achieving this accolade, Kwang Bok Kim’s delight at hearing he had been awarded 24 was short lived, as the announcement was immediately followed by that for Sang Oak Nam, even more delighted to have been awarded the lower handicap of 23.

Full prize-winner results: 1st: Keith Roberts (43 points), 2nd: Anil Nair (41), 3rd: Bill Scarth (41), 4th: Ahmed Al Noaimi (41), 5th: Dave Turner (40).
