There were three clear winners in the GulfWeekly/ Citroen Ladies League this week, as Seef Dental beat the Gunners 4-0, Venus continued a winning start by beating Joga 2-1 and the Arsenal Ladies notched a 3-1 over their U21 clubmates.

In the closest encounter, Joga took an early lead against Venus with a goal from Zahra Algasab, but, like last week, were unable to hold onto the lead for long before Staz Salinas equalised for Venus.

The second half was well contested, but with eight minutes remaining, Staz struck again to claim all three points, keeping Venus’ 100 power cent  record.

The other team with a 100 per cent record is Arsenal Ladies, who enjoyed a more comfortable win against the Arsenal U21s.

They raced into a two-goal lead within 10 minutes through a terrific Marybeth Sullivan strike followed by a Reema Al Qassab goal.  Nada Al Saeed then added a third, before the youngsters struck back through Phoebe License.

In the final 15 minutes of the game, the U21s continued to press, and had chances to bring the scores even closer, but the Ladies ended the game with maximum points.

Seef opened their season’s account with a good win over the Gunners. The match was closer than the 4-0 scoreline suggested, but Seef took their chances superbly, particularly Sandra Diaz Santos who claimed herself a hat-trick, and Karin Bashir who scored the other.

So after two games, Venus and Arsenal Ladies are top with six points, followed by Seef and the 21s on three. This week sees Seef taking on Venus, the 21s playing the Gunners and Joga up against the Arsenal Ladies.

The Royal University for Women of Bahrain hosted a football tournament at Soccer City last weekend. Five teams entered the tournament with guests from YFC in Riyadh (Saudi), The Australian University of Kuwait (AUK), and RUW, Arsenal Ladies and Venus all based in Bahrain.

The final saw Arsenal pressured very early on but Katie Eames took a shot on the half volley from a throw -in sending Arsenal into the lead.

A controversial hand ball offence gave AUK the chance to bring the scores level and a well converted penalty did the trick.

Late in the first half Arsenal restored the lead when a long throw in from Melissa Gut was met by the head of Deena Rahman and placed into the corner of the net. In the second half AUK again equalised when a deflected free kick went in.

Katie Eames then coolly slotted it past the keeper to ensure Arsenal Ladies were crowned winners.
