Hundreds of low-paid labourers were set to cuddle down each night in luxury five-star hotel mattresses … until a charity discovered they were too large to fit into the space available for beds in the cramped labour camps visited.

As a result the offer from Majid Al Futtaim Properties (MAF) was declined by a leading charity in Bahrain although the Whisperer understands a number of other good causes in the kingdom may be willing to find a home for them over time.

Better to make good use through a corporate responsibility initiative than throw away perfectly good items.
The 622 mattresses currently fit king and twin-size beds in the 460 rooms at the Kempinski Grand & Ixir Hotel Bahrain City Centre.

The hotel complex reopens in July as The Westin and Le Meridien, hospitality brands which claim to offer guests a different kind of sleeping experience.
