Youth Talk – A little ray of sunshine

It’s rare for Young Adult novels to appeal to a larger demographic, but John Green’s beautifully written The Fault in Our Stars – affectionately named ‘TFIOS’ – is an exception.

I was fortunate enough to read it when it was originally published in early 2012 and after being swept off my feet by this spellbinding book, I began thinking deeply about it. Now that the film adaptation has been released for the masses (June 12 in Bahrain), maybe all of us can introspect about the central themes of hope and positivity.

The selling point of TFIOS is that it is poignant, and although the looming spectre of cancer is prominent – it is not the focal message of the story.

It’s about hope, in the face of adversity; about living your life within the numbered days that we have. ‘Some infinities are bigger than other infinities’, and we should be grateful for the unbounded set that we have been granted.

It’s far too easy to get sucked into the vortex of tedium in our daily lives, and to live through the monotony. We all need a reminder sometimes of the fact that it’s our life, and it’s our responsibility to make the most of our little infinity.
