Buried in the sand

A buried lie in the bunker is a shot that instils fear into many golfers. Yet, with a few minor adjustments to the setup and swing, it is a shot that can be mastered by anyone!
* Take a solid stance in the sand with 70 per cent of your weight favouring your forward foot.
* The ball position should be approximately in the centre of the stance to ensure a steeper angle of attack.
* Keep the clubface square on to the target, so that the leading edge can ‘dig’ the ball out (different to a regular bunker shot where we open the club to allow the club to ‘bounce’ through the sand).
* In the backswing allow the wrists to break, picking the club up quickly.
* The downswing should be positive, aiming to drive the club head into the sand an inch behind the ball allowing it to ‘pop’ out.

Remember the ball will come out a bit lower than normal and with less spin, so allow for some run when it lands. Some time spent in the practice bunker using this technique will improve your confidence and help to develop your feel for this shot.
