An exhibition by amateur photographer Kanwal Hameed at Al Riwaq Art Space in Adliya opening on Monday at 7pm takes a playful approach to serious questions about culture, identity, society and political engagement. The questions are located in the world inherited by a materially privileged generation of Gulf society, he says. Taking inspiration from the influential ‘End of History’ essay by political theorist Francis Fukuyama, the photographs recreate iconic images from events marking major historic shifts in popular consciousness during the 20th and 21st Century.
The Perm Tchaikovsky Opera and Ballet Theatre presents The Nutcracker, one of the most famous plays of all-time at the Bahrain National Theatre on September 18-19. The show is headlined by the talented ballet duo Anastasia Matvienko in the role of the kind-hearted young girl Marie, and Denis Matvienko in the role of her awkward wooden nutcracker doll, whom she can sense hides a special secret.
The show features the famous score by legendary Pyotr Tchaikovsky who composed it specifically for this play when it debuted in 1892.
The music is perfectly complemented by the delicate choreography designed by Vasily Vainonen, staging by Natalia Spitsina as well as set and costume designs by Vaycheslav Okunev.

The Palm Association is hosting the Great Gatsby Charity Ball at the Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain Hotel & Spa on September 25. It will be a night of glamour as you are taken back to the 1920s, complete with music and cuisine.
The BSPCA will run an ‘Amazing Auction’ at Upstairs Downstairs, Adliya, on September 27. The restaurant is offering a four-course buffet brunch plus red, white and sparkly refreshments for BD20 (inclusive). Doors open at 11.30am, the buffet will be served from noon and popular South African singer Paul ‘Toddy’ Adams will entertain until 2pm, prior to the auction.

Footballing legends Graeme Souness and Gordon Banks will be coming to Bahrain on September 25 at the Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa. TV pundit and former Scotland international Souness played with Liverpool, Rangers and Sampdoria, winning three European Cups, nine league titles and a plethora of British domestic trophies. Goalkeeper Banks was an instrumental part of England’s 1966 World Cup winning side. The duo will share soccer stories from 8pm.
