In a momentous week for the Scottish electoral process the voters chose change! Nearly a century after women won the right to vote 85 per cent of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club’s 2,400 membership chose to write a new chapter to their 260-year history by removing the barrier to female membership.

A number of women will be fast-tracked in much the same manner that Augusta, home of the Masters, elected Condoleezza Rice in 2012 for the first time in its 80-year history.

This decision is seen as being particularly significant with golf’s return to the Olympics in 2016 and could be the catalyst to inspire a new generation of players.

St Andrews, the home of the R&A, is expected to inspire other Open venues such as Muirfield and Troon. While women had been allowed to play the Old Course they had previously been unable to join the club as members.
