Morag from Manama

Does being an expat change us? The answer to me is obvious; there is only one answer – yes. Of course, it does!

You see, this summer a good friend remarked how I had changed. I’m not the same Morag to the one that used to live at the top of her road. To be honest, I was quite taken aback, not because I disagree with my friend’s statement but because I was flabbergasted that she had only just noticed.

It’s been 10 years of ups and downs, trailing behind the husband as his career has carried us from Africa, Asia and to the Middle East. We have had laughter and tears, sometimes at the same time!

I look at our expat life as an adventure and a gift and would I do it again? Absolutely!

The expat life has allowed us to experience new cultures, travel to places normally beyond our financial means, savour new tastes and smells, form lifelong friends around the globe, all be it, whilst living a pretty good standard of life. Dare I say it; I think we may now come under the umbrella of being ‘global citizens!’

Should I have asked my friend in what way had I changed, for better or worse? Maybe if she had taken some time to ask me over the years about my expat life it would have given her some answers.
