Awali lady golfers Jac Parker and Nicky Park swept to first and third place in the AGC summer ‘Saturday Ball Sweep’ competition. Club Captain Bill Scarth snuck into second place, courtesy of 20 points on the last day.
Newly-handicapped Parker is playing her first full season and puts her outstanding performance down to regular lessons with club pro Matt Chalmers, plus a lot of hard work.
The ‘best of’ series saw golfers competing throughout the summer, playing as many Saturdays as possible over an 18-week period.
Each player’s best 10 Stableford scores counted towards the overall winning places. There were also prizes each week based on a player’s performance and a rather random handicap system applied by the ball sweep ‘Presidente’, Scarth.
The record-breaking August temperature was not the only record set, with previously unheard of numbers of players honing their golfing skills during the off season. With each player also contributing financially every week, the ball sweep also saw a record sum raised for charity.
Farooq Ahmed contributed a prize for the person who played the most number of times. This was shared by Parker and Park with an outstanding 15 weeks play out of the 18. True dedication in the searing summer heat, club executives said.
Hamad Al Amar contributed the prizes which were won by Parker (1st), Scarth (2nd) and Park (3rd). During the presentation it was revealed that far from being ‘bandits’ the top three players were also the players competing under the largest handicap reductions, with the winner playing a fantastic 13 shots below her official Congu handicap.
Al Amar and Ahmed also arranged the food, drinks and raffle for the end-of-competition celebrations. “An incredibly generous contribution from AGC members which typifies the spirit of an amazing club,” said Scarth.
