Embroiled in an affair with Thomas Callahan, her professor, precocious student Darby Shaw writes up an insightful theory about the recent murder of two Supreme Court justices. When he shares this so-called ‘Pelican Brief’ with buddy Gavin Verheek, an FBI lawyer, the document makes its way to the White House. When Callahan is murdered and the President convinces the FBI to hold off on investigating Darby’s theory, she is forced to go into hiding.

Mathematician John Forbes Nash Jr seems guaranteed a rosy future in the early 1950s after he marries beautiful student Alicia and makes a remarkable advancement in the foundations of ‘game theory’ which carries him to the brink of international acclaim. Soon after, John is visited by the CIA, who want to recruit him for code-breaking activities. However, his mental state is pushed to the limit.

Dr Jack is a shrewed womanising forensic psychologist and professor working with the FBI in Seattle. A tortured past makes him great at what he does. However, when he receives a death threat telling him that he has only 88 minutes to live he has to narrow down possible suspects as he frantically seeks to communicate with a problem student, an ex-girlfriend, and a serial killer on death row.

Max works as a waitress in a Brooklyn diner. Caroline is the daughter of a Ponzi king who is now in jail and she’s broke. She gets a job working at the diner alongside Max and a few colourful characters such as Mr Han, the owner, and Garrett Morris. Caroline is the rich girl with an Ivy league degree who has lost everything. Max has a soft side and welcomes her reluctantly into her life and home.

Spencer Armacost is an astronaut on a routine mission in space when something goes horribly wrong. However, Spencer is rescued at the last moment and returns to earth a hero. He soon announces that he’s retiring from space exploration to spend more time with his wife Jillian. Jillian gets pregnant but starts to notice something odd about her husband. As her pregnancy advances, her anxieties increase.

Alone among assassins, Jack is a master craftsman. When a job in Sweden ends more harshly than expected for this American abroad, he vows that his next assignment will be his last. Jack reports to the Italian countryside, where he stays in a small town and relishes being away from death. Surprising himself, Jack seeks out the friendship of local priest Father Benedetto and pursues romance with local woman Clara.
