There has been some controversy over Facebook including an option to change your profile picture to resemble the French flag as a way to show support towards the people of Paris following the recent terror attacks.

The tragic event left many people wanting to help in any way they could or at least acknowledge the suffering endured.

This is not the first time social media has provided a voice following tragic global events. Twitter responded, impressively, to the victims of the Haiti earthquake as the site quickly filled up with Haiti-related information and aid – ultimately raising millions of pounds in fundraising for the cause.

We may not realise that when we participate on social media, even if we aren’t there to help physically, it can provide us with a foundation to act upon an event positively that has affected many in a negative fashion.

Years ago we would have had much smaller opportunity to let our voice be heard, but today there is an option to get involved and certainly to feel better once clicked.

I feel great to live in a time when people are provided with an opportunity to get involved. I give my utmost respect to Facebook and other companies who have allowed ordinary people to offer support to victims. These are tough times but with support online, whether it’s sending a message, or donating money to a worthy cause, collaboration really can make a difference. Condolences to Paris.
